Medication-Assisted Treatment

Pacific Solstice is one of the only drug and alcohol treatment centers in Orange County to offer Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) as part of our innovative treatment programs.

A state-of-the-art evidenced-based treatment option, MAT has been fully researched and widely implemented by medical professionals nationwide. Many of professionals who use MAT believe it to be a life-saving, effective approach to helping people who struggle with severe long-term addiction and repeated relapse.

MAT uses proven practices and a whole-patient approach that combines pharmacological interventions with substance abuse counseling and support. MAT has shown promising results in controlling cravings, blocking the effects of certain drugs and alcohol, and returning body functions to normal.

Quick Look

We’ll help you determine whether our MAT option is right for you. Our MAT approach is:

  • Based on the SAMSHA model
  • Evidence-based and fully researched
  • Carefully monitored
  • A viable option for people who suffer from repeat relapse and long-term addiction
  • Part of a holistic, whole-person approach to recovery

At Pacific Solstice, we believe that every individual’s journey is different, and deserves a treatment plan customized for them and their needs. While a specific intervention may be right for for one person, it may be the wrong choice for another. That’s why we carefully assess whether MAT is the best path for each patient under our care.

Is MAT right for you?

So how do we decide who’s right for MAT? We first complete a thorough assessment with the individual to determine if MAT is a viable treatment option. Some patients may be firmly opposed to using medication as part of their treatment, instead choosing to pursue a completely chemical-free path to sobriety. We respect this and never impose medication on any individual in our care.

But when working with a patient who has experienced multiple relapses in recovery using other treatment approaches; has cycled in and out of prison; has been addicted to opiates long-term from a young age; or is in immediate danger of overdosing or being harmed, we strongly advocate exploring MAT as a treatment option. We also take the time to make sure our patients and their families are educated about the benefits and risks of MAT so that they can make an informed decision.

Part of a Holistic Approach

At Pacific Solstice, we employ the MAT model advocated by by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). In our MAT approach, we use a medication called Bupernorphene. While categorized as an opiate, Bupernorphene does not provide a strong enough effect to get a patient “high.” It’s also very effective in preventing the serious danger of death from overdose.

It’s important to understand that MAT is not an end-all-be-all treatment. Rather, MAT is one component of a much larger holistic recovery that addresses all aspects of a person’s physical and mental wellbeing; day-to-day functioning in school, work, and life; as well as social, financial, and independent living skills. MAT is one more innovative tool in our treatment toolkit to help people overcome their addiction, achieve long-term recovery, and thrive in life.
